Two weeks ago, I spent the morning helping out with an annual event called Living for Livi Running Festival. The event was photographed by Pamela Harvey and I used some of her pictures in this post.
Four years ago, my friend Becky Adams started this running festival to benefit a family whose 18th month old child had been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Each year since then has been designated to help raise awareness and funds for a different family in our Maryland Community. The total amount of money raised for the honoree families thus far exceeds $45,000. Last year we raised funds for Alyssa Marple – A Day for AJ. Alyssa was born with a great deal of disabilities requiring many supplemental oxygen and multiple surgeries starting very shortly after birth. This year was called “A Race for Mase”, and the proceeds went to an 11-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2007, had been in remission, and the cancer returned 18 months ago. His family was on hand that day and took part in the festival.
It was a chilly morning as I picked up 5 dozen donuts from our friend Jessica at Paradise Donuts.
I was thrilled to see that Bel Air High School had a fleet of volunteers, who were on the location at 7 AM. These were some of the most energetic, positive teenagers that I have ever met. In the past, a few of us bustled around cutting up bananas, bagels and donuts and other refreshments for the runners, but it was such a pleasure having young people do a lot of the legwork.
The 130 participants and sponsors ( Bel Air Athletic Club, Crazy Tuna, LB Artesian Engraving, JDT Transportation, DO Believe, Challenge Island, K Dental, Creative Cow, GNC, Jones Junction, Keene Dodge Jeep Ram Chrysler, Carla Fink Cummings & Co Reality, Premier Chiropractic) Started arriving as soon as the Bel Air Athletic Club was set up. There was a great feeling of community!
They had a wonderful selection of silent auction items.
The previous recipients were on hand to celebrate.
Here are some pictures of runners:
Afterwards, prizes were awarded and a check was presented to the family for $6,500, which will no doubt help with medical expenses for this youngster!
It was a wonderful day for everyone! Here is the website this annual event:
